Effects of the Writing Direction of the Acquired Second Language on Time Perception

A TÜBİTAK project titled “Effects of the Writing Direction of the Acquired Second Language on Time Perception” coordinated by Asst. Prof. Aslı Aktan-Erciyes from the Department of Psychology is a study that analyzes how learning a different language would affect the cognitive processes hypothetically and practically.

 

Learning a different language other than your native language opens a different window to your perspective on life. In the meantime, some cognitive processes may also be unexpectedly affected thereby. As you learn a second language, you update cognitive processes. Neither your native language will remain the same as you knew it, nor your acquired second language will be independent of your native language.

For example, your time perception may be affected your acquired second language (if it has a different writing direction from that of your native language). For you, the time will flow from left to right less than before.

A TÜBİTAK project titled “Effects of the Writing Direction of the Acquired Second Language on Time Perception” coordinated by Asst. Prof. Aslı Aktan-Erciyes from the Department of Psychology is intended to explain the effects of the second language on the native language processes both hypothetically and practically.

This project, with a budget of TL 44,500 supported by the TÜBİTAK 1002 Quick Support Program, started in October 2021 and will continue until August 2022. The project is currently at the data collection stage and aimed at young adults.
